The studio is at an all time high in terms of messiness this week!
It’s packing time for a show in Las Vegas and I’m literally up to my knees in bubble wrap, peanuts and boxes in the living room/packing and shipping room. Mix in two big Labradors that run the place and you get the idea. Soon things will return to a reasonable level of normalcy, if we ever get it clean. We always clean up the place for the neighbor who looks after the dogs while we are away.

This week I’m thinking about color. Honestly I’ve always been a bit nervous about using color. I just feel like there really is so much to learn and know. I’ve always used color very sparingly (as many of my friends and family are sure to tell you) Currently I’m working primarily with black and white with a vibrant splash or lime green or red here and there. This works for me and I don’t find it to overwhelming so for the time being, I’m going to stick with this.
I see a lot of potential with using more color but not right now. In the last couple of years I’ve become less afraid of color but still have a ways to go. This may somewhat account for the color of our house-black of course-but I love it. Black and white just seems to works with everything.
I do find yellow and green to be my two favorite colors. The thing I love about the Pacific Northwest is all the beautiful greenery that is around. I’m looking out the window right now and wow…
What colors do you like for the ceramics?

OK, this stuff rocks, it’s precision and repetition at its best. Wow this is the sleek and precision that just brings it all in. For me, her stuff is wow neat and she appears to be very successful, with a gigantic catalog of product, but so not me. I’m not clinical precision, I’m not repetition heck It’s hard even for me to produce the same shape twice.
I don’t know how many times people ask for an exact copy of an item like I can just pump it out of a factory somewhere in my factory. Even If I do try and copy exactly something the piece ends up more often than not without a soul. It has no vigor or vibrancy. You can see I was tensed up trying to reproduce. I’m great at making variations of items with difference views and looks that give a similar theme, but the sleek precision reproduction is not in my soul. I’m a creative exploring one that loves to try the next new thing.

Another order out the door, another great gallery with my work (yeah!) These guys are the New Morning Gallery in Asheville, North Carolina. I remember the buyers. Both very sweet and patient. We were pretty busy when they came by to order and I felt very bad not being able to speak to them sooner than I did. I’m feeling really good about this relationship.

Today I found out that I’ve been invited to the Philadelphia Art Museum show!! I’m so excited that I’m almost sick to my stomach.
To be very honest, I’m always very intimidated by everyone at these shows, and looking at the amazing work of all the other artists is pretty stressful to me. I’m sooo incredibly excited and happy but, pretty stressed about the preparation as well. Wow…
Guess I better get ceramic making. How does this happen? I think I’m on my way…yeeeheee! Happy Dance time. Yeah!

Today I’m experimenting with a new line. This line is done only in white.
Inspiration came while over at a friends house for a friendly pizza making competition. After the bake-off we ended up with 3 gorgeous pizzas and I started thinking about how incredible this meal would look on some really nice, handmade, subtle white plates. And so I got to work. I’ve also made a couple of smaller plates and some bowls to go with. I’m excited to see how these will turn out. Pictures later.

These are some great examples of visual/two-dimensional surface design in repetition or patterning. I enjoy the repetition and mark making involved in these pieces. Definitely not something that can be mass produced. This is from Monika Stocker, from the Swiss ceramics site.
