SWEARING OFF THE POTTY PLATES – GIACOMETTI

11.27.2009

“The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity.” Alberto Giacometti

I’ve thought about this and need to think about this more. I understand the object of art is not to reproduce reality, why would anything want to do such a thing…boring…I guess it would be a test in craftsmanship but beyond this…I’m not sure.

I get this.

I think it’s important to create a different intense reality, something that creates a reaction. I think strong reaction of any kind is possibly better than no reaction at all. Maybe..I’m still questioning this..At one point I thought it was fun to do old fashion toilets on a plate…I’m over this now. People are very polite. For a very short time, I thought this was funny, now I realize maybe for a second it’s funny but not for that much longer. So I can now say I think I’m off the potty plates, no more potty plates from me.

CREATE SOMETHING NEW

11.02.2009

“The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves”
- C.G. Jung

This quote really speaks to me. I think my best pieces come not from clearly planning a piece but from play and a real need to play or make. I really love clay and the endless ways I can manipulate it. I love the memory clay seems to have, really showing how the object is made.
